Norma Schatz October Democratic Letter

To Plymouth Harbor Democrats…and others who care                   October, 2019

So many things going on it’s hard to keep track  - or respond to in some timely way.
In D.C the House is in recess until October 15th, tho the Impeachment inquiries will continue. The House has passed and sent over 200 bills to the Senate where Mitch McConnell seems to move nothing without the President’s pre-approval.   Bills include gun safety legislation (expanding background checks, Red Flag bill, and renewal of the ban on military style weapons.), renewal of the Violence Against Women Act, the Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act (this being heavily lobbied against by the pharmaceutical industry).  Don’t hold your breath - but keep on calling.
The U.S. Supreme Court will begin its 2019-20 Term October 7th.   Among the cases to be heard: whether employment discrimination based on sex in the Civil Right Act of 1964 includes sexual orientation and, in another case, sexual identity ; whether the decision to terminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), making those young adults eligible for deportation, is lawful; whether the state is in violation of its state constitution’s equal protection clause when scholarship funding for private school scholarships is used for religious schools; whether states and cities can regulate firearms to promote gun safety  - these among many others.  Some pundits say that Chief Justice Roberts doesn’t want the Court to appear political, but with 5 conservative and 4 liberal judges,  we shall see.

Lots going on in Tallahassee.  Bills are being submitted and committees are holding pre-session hearings.
Contrary to the support of Floridians for gun safety,“Our” Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has filed a petition to block the Ban Assault Weapons Now amendment from the 2020 ballot based on “deficient” language. The bill actually defines assault weapons as “any semiautomatic rifle or shotgun capable of holding more than ten (10) rounds of ammunition at once, either in a fixed or detachable magazine, or any other ammunition-feeding device.”  In addition to requiring 766,200 verified signatures, the petition’s wording has to be approved by the Florida supreme court.  Florida’s AG Moody has not joined 23 other states and the District of Columbia and two cities in  opposing the Trump/EPA rollback of the Clean Air Act’s auto emission standards that had raised fuel usage targets and had been reducing pollution to protect public health.
Florida Senate Leader Galvano’s pet bill adds three new toll roads across south central and north Florida.  Environmentalists are concerned that these major roads would destroy farm land and wildlife habitat, as well as promote development and destroy wetlands, springs and aquifer recharge areas.  Supporters of the plan are the trucking industry, road builders and developers who profit from paving over Florida (from Progress Florida 9/17/19)
Governor DeSantis has started a Protect the President Fund. You can add to it by paying to play golf or dine with the Gov. He is still slow-walking the return of civil rights to ex-felons that was approved in the 2018 election.

Consider this: “The [Trump] administration is currently moving forward with plans to spend more than one trillion dollars to replace the entire U.S. nuclear arsenal and build new, more ‘usable’ nuclear weapons.  All while walking away from critical nuclear arms control agreements that have made the world a safer place.” (Union of Concerned Scientists 9/4/19)
